Art Bra Austin is a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Resource Center of Texas. Artists and designers create/design bras for a runway show in which all the models are breast cancer patients and survivors. The bras are auctioned off to raise money for the center. This is the bra and ensemble I created in 2016. I collaborated with The Piazza Center to design and create this piece for one of Dr. Piazza's patients to model on the runway.
The inspiration for this piece was my painting "Chaparral". The piece is made from recycled materials. To create an abstract look of feathers I used small leather pieces that I cut from old leather jackets and hand tacked each individual piece to the bra. The strips attached to the straps of the bra are made from used bicycle inner tubes. Antique glass beads & Czech glass beads are individually hand sewn to the bra. The tail is made from used bicycle inner tubes with added beads and feathers. A vintage hat made by my grandmother represents the crest. I painted it and added feathers and beads. My grandmother had breast cancer so I felt it was fitting to include her hat in the piece. I painted vintage leather shorts and added bead details to the ties. To finish the ensemble I painted the roadrunner on the back of a vintage leather jacket.
